In this podcast, Bloom talks about why empathy is linked to prejudice and why the “biases and messiness of empathy” get in the way of genuine problem-solving. In the introduction to 'Against Empathy: The Case for Rational Compassion,' Yale psychologist Paul Bloom, PhD, writes that when he told people he was writing a book against empathy, it was like telling them he was writing a book 'against kittens.' Indeed, empathy may be even more beloved. “We find ourselves in weird situations where we care a lot more about one specified person, one identifiable victim, than we care about a thousand people who are in the same situation.” ![]() “What empathy does, is it zooms you in on an individual,” he says. He argues that this kind of empathy can cause us to make short-sighted and even biased decisions. ![]() At first glance, the title may seem callous but Bloom makes clear that he is against a very particular kind of empathy: feeling the pain and suffering of others. ![]() ![]() Bloom tackles the complexities of doing good in his new book, Against Empathy: The Case for Rational Compassion. ![]()

Network Effect is the first novel-length work in Martha Wells’ Murderbot Diaries saga and the fifth entry in the series overall. But when an old acquaintance kidnaps Murderbot’s crew and demands its help as ransom, Murderbot is forced away from the media feed to save the day (again) and get its humans back safe and sound. There are plenty of comic moments but much more heart than you’d expect. I’m glad Matt Damon got involved over Ben Stiller. It’s well directed by Cameron Crowe who helmed other thoughtful pieces like Almost Famous and Jerry Maguire. We Bought A Zoo will remind viewers a lot of Life As A House, where Kevin Kline repaired a relationship with his son over the course of a building project. Does Benjamin have what it takes to re-open this attraction, and renovate his family life in the process? Based on a true story that took place in the UK, this Californian reimagining is part comedy, part family journey and all heart. ![]() But his new home turns out to be the front of a dilapidated zoo. Benjamin decides to pull up stakes and move to the country to provide his family with ‘an authentic American experience’. But in Not So Pure and Simple we see just that: a complex portrait of a lovably imperfect boy struggling with his identity in many forms. There can never be a Black teenage boy that falls somewhere in the middle. So much of what is fed to the masses is that Black boys are troublemakers, or that there are only two types of kids: one that is a problem child and another that is squeaky clean. One of the things I’m loving about YA right now is that we’re seeing more and more stories being told by Black male writers about Black boys. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() If Danny can’t sort through the confusion of coming out, master her powers, and stop Utopia in time, humanity faces extinction.
